The Sol Story
Sol (Spanish for 'sun') means many things. For many in the Tempe/Chandler, Arizona community, Corona del Sol high school is considered the beginning of this area. With neighborhood complexes and doctors offices named after 'the crown of the sun' school, this area has a passion for Sol. But my relationship with the sun means more than that, growing up in Arizona. Coming home after school and sitting in my parents' backyard under the sun became a ritual meditation for me. Finding peace with the birds chirping and warmth from that light that never fades in Arizona, the sun still does wonders for my mental health. Now as an adult, my dad likes to remind me, if I'm SOL (shit out of luck) I can always benefit from some 'sol' time. It doesn't heal everything, but, with some sunscreen on and an ice cold glass of water, some sol time may just help heal the soul. I hope Sol Counseling may continue that healing energy that the Sol community gave me all my life.
My Influences
In 1995, I was brought into this world by my amazing parents Robbie Adler- Tapia and Hugo Tapia. Along with my two older brothers, I had the unique experience of growing up with two parents who are therapists. Both my parents graduated from ASU with PhDs in Counseling Psychology, so you could say that I followed some well paved foot steps. Similar to many Arizona natives, my father is a Mexican immigrant and his life's work as a Psychologist in Phoenix schools has influenced much of my life perspective. He continues to inspire my love of advocacy and supporting inclusion of all diverse individuals as I've working alongside him in a Tempe Union high school these past few years! My mother's legacy does not pale in comparison though. Coming to Arizona with just a few things and a dog in her car, my mom has created a name for herself through many years of being an incredible Psychologist, a writer, and a mental health therapist trainer. Being one of the first to do EMDR therapy with children, my mother has now created an immensely successful business training therapists to treat underserved communities and law enforcement with the most effective trauma treatment. My first job was in my mom's office at Tapia Counseling & Psychological Services, so many would think this path came easy to me, and they wouldn't be wrong! However, therapy wasn't always my goal. My love of food and passion for diverse body acceptance originally led me towards a nutrition path at the University of Arizona. However, my own struggles with anxiety and depression, and a very difficult chemistry class, eventually led me back into the world of psychology. In 3 short years, I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. After working with children in the foster care system for some time, I decided I needed to do more, and there I met ASU's counseling program. In 2020 I graduated with my Master's in Counseling degree and now I am working on completing my associate level license requirements. As an LAC, I have the privilege of being under the supervision of Valerie Everton, LPC, a former private practice owner herself, as I begin to develop my own private practice. I can only hope to create a legacy at Sol Counseling Services as influential as these inspirational humans from which I've had the privilege of learning.
